The short version

Deadlines for appeals are often short and strict. Check the rule that applies to your case and court right away.

Note the decision date

The clock often starts from the date of the decision or of notice of it. Write down the date you received it.

Find the notice rules

Look up the form and filing rules for a notice of appeal in your court, including where and how to file.

Ask early if you are unsure

Clerks can show you where forms are kept. They cannot tell you whether you should appeal.
